At the beginning of each year, the question inevitably arises: are fireworks still an appropriate form of celebration, or have they become a burden on the environment and animal welfare?
The Government of the Netherlands has recently announced a total ban on the use of consumer fireworks, which will take effect in 2026. Under this policy, only licensed professionals will be permitted to conduct large-scale fireworks displays. In South Africa, certain municipalities, such as Knysna & Sedgefield, have also implemented complete bans on fireworks due to environmental risks and associated safety concerns.
In light of these developments, do you believe that fireworks should be banned entirely across South Africa? Our current legislation allows for different variations across the bylaws but we question whether law enforcement has sufficient capacity to correctly enforce these regulations especially during busy seasons such as 'New Year' celebrations.
DearSA is calling on all South Africans to voice their opinion and have-your-say to shape local legislation!
