POLL: Should the Government Stop Funding Trips for Super Fans?

Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has announced the cessation of all government-sponsored trips for super fans, such as Joy “Mama Joy” and Botha Msila. The decision comes in light of the need to reallocate funds to support athletes and artists who struggle to finance their participation in sporting events and exhibitions.

Minister McKenzie's Statement: "We have athletes and artists who are struggling to raise money to attend sporting events and exhibitions. How do we justify paying for fans?"

The department disclosed that sending Mama Joy and Msila to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France cost around R1.3 million. The decision emphasises a focus on directing funds towards athletes and artists rather than fans, highlighting a shift towards a more athlete-centric funding approach.
