The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has proposed reducing speed limits across South Africa by 10km/h on all roads. If implemented, this would mean:
• Urban areas: 60km/h → 50km/h
• Non-freeway roads outside urban areas: 100km/h → 90km/h
• Highways: 120km/h → 110km/h
The government argues this change will improve road safety and align with United Nations recommendations. However, some experts disagree, saying there is no clear evidence that lowering speed limits will reduce road fatalities.
What do you think? Will this proposal make our roads safer, or is it an unnecessary restriction?
