Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has expressed his desire to bring Formula One (F1) back to South Africa. While this could boost tourism and the economy, hosting an F1 race comes with massive costs. The hosting fee alone is estimated to be over $50 million (approximately R950 million), excluding infrastructure upgrades and operational expenses.
Some believe an F1 race would place South Africa on the global stage and create jobs. Others argue that the country has more pressing priorities, such as service delivery, education, and healthcare.

This infographic reveals what countries are currently paying to host an F1 race in 2023. Costs range from $20 million (R380 million) in Monaco to a whopping $57 million (R1.08 billion) in Azerbaijan. With South Africa’s pressing economic challenges, is this a smart investment, or are there bigger priorities?
