Ministers' Car Cap Raised to R1.1 Million While South Africans Battle Fuel Hikes — Have Your Say

National Treasury has raised the vehicle price cap for ministers and premiers by 37.5% to R1.1 million, even as South Africans face sharp fuel price hikes. The move has sparked backlash, especially as government admits it cannot quantify the total cost of these perks.

Summary

National Treasury has increased the vehicle price cap for ministers and premiers by 37.5%, from R800 000 to R1.1 million, a move confirmed by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana. Government says the adjustment reflects years of missed increases since 2020, but the decision has landed at a time when South Africans are facing some of the sharpest fuel price hikes in recent memory, fuelling public anger.

The backlash is not only about the higher cap, but what it revealed. Treasury has admitted it does not hold a consolidated figure for the total cost of official vehicles and executive perks across government, as procurement is handled separately by departments. Critics argue this lack of transparency raises serious concerns about accountability and how public money is being spent.

The timing has made matters worse. With petrol and diesel prices rising significantly and temporary relief measures expected to be recovered through future revenue mechanisms, many South Africans are under increasing financial pressure. Against this backdrop, the increase in ministerial vehicle limits has been widely criticised as out of touch, prompting renewed calls for greater transparency, oversight, and restraint in government spending.
