Spaza shop tragedy: Dear South Africa files PAIA request, demanding answers from Gauteng Provincial Government

Dear South Africa has filed a Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) request to the Gauteng Provincial Government, demanding transparency and immediate action following the tragic deaths of 23 children from alleged food poisoning linked to snacks bought supposedly at local spaza shops.

“This incident has not only caused heartbreak but  also ignited grave concerns over food safety regulations, especially in informal retail sectors near schools and densely populated communities,” stated Nolu Hlophoyi, spokesperson for DearSA.

In light of this crisis, Dear South Africa has formally requested relevant records and information to understand the Gauteng government’s measures, inspections, and strategies aimed at protecting the health of vulnerable communities.

According to Hlophoyi, the request focuses on inspection reports from the Department of Health on food premises, including spaza shops; detailed data and analysis on foodborne illnesses originating from these shops; records of regulatory frameworks, guidelines, and compliance policies governing food safety standards; and information on public health initiatives aimed at educating spaza shop owners on food safety, hygiene, and regulatory requirements.

The recent fatalities underscore an urgent need for a comprehensive review of food safety oversight in Gauteng’s informal food sector. By accessing this information, Dear South Africa intends to hold relevant authorities accountable, advocating for strengthened regulations and preventive measures that safeguard public health, especially among the province’s most vulnerable – its children.

“We urge the Gauteng government to demonstrate a commitment to transparency and public safety by responding swiftly and comprehensively to this PAIA request,” Hlophoy emphasised.

Dear South Africa will continue to monitor developments to ensure that necessary actions are taken. “The safety and well-being of our children and communities must remain a priority, and we call on the Gauteng Provincial Government to make immediate strides toward safeguarding public health,” Hlophoyi concluded.
