According to Nolu Hlophoyi, spokesperson for DearSA, this initiative in collaboration with the South African Law Reform Commission (SALRC), aims to bring South African law into alignment with international standards, enabling individuals with disabilities to fully and equally enjoy their human rights and freedoms.
Hlophoyi futher states that the CRPD, an international human rights treaty adopted by the United Nations, is focused on safeguarding and advancing the dignity, rights, and participation of people with disabilities. “South Africa’s exploration of this convention marks a crucial moment in its ongoing commitment to inclusivity and the promotion of equal rights. To make this integration as effective and representative as possible, the SALRC is actively seeking public input on how best to implement the CRPD’s standards within South Africa’s legal framework.”
Dear South Africa invites all members of the public, stakeholders, and advocacy groups to participate in this law reform process. “By contributing feedback, South Africans have the opportunity to shape policies that will enhance the rights and dignity of the disability community, making legislation more inclusive, responsive, and reflective of the real-world challenges that people with disabilities face,” Hlophoyi added.
