Protecting young lives and preserving culture: Speak out on Customary Initiation Regulations

The Draft Customary Initiation Regulations, developed to uphold the health, dignity, and cultural rights of initiates while preserving South Africa's constitutional principles, are now the focus of an urgent poll by DearSA.

“We invite all citizens to take part in this critical poll, providing your input on how this vital legislation can balance cultural traditions with safety and human rights,” says Nolu Hlophoyi, spokesperson for DearSA.

According to Hlophoyi reports of severe injuries, abuses, and fatalities particularly among young men in initiation practices, have underscored the urgent need for comprehensive governance and oversight. The proposed regulations seek to address these challenges by establishing a framework that safeguards the health and well-being of participants, eradicates exploitation, and promotes accountability.

The regulations highlight the importance of:

  • Safety and Dignity: Ensuring initiation practices align with constitutional rights, protecting participants from abuse and neglect.
  • Oversight and Compliance: Requiring registration and adherence to safety standards for initiation schools.
  • Community Collaboration: Encouraging partnerships between traditional leaders, caregivers, medical practitioners, and government bodies for effective governance.

"These regulations represent a vital step toward preserving the cultural significance of initiation while addressing the dangers posed by illegal and unsafe practices," says Hlophoyi.

DearSA emphasises that your input can directly influence the policies that will govern customary initiation practices in South Africa. By sharing your views, you contribute to a balanced approach that respects cultural heritage while protecting human rights.
