In June, Lefa Mosea was honored with third place in the Sport, Culture, and Environment category at DearSA's Youth Leaders Awards. This accolade was earned through his impressive work as an independent artist and community leader. His debut album, Double Standards, released in 2020, has not only captivated audiences but also sparked a cultural movement within his community.
When asked about the project that earned him this prestigious award, Lefa shared, "I got the award through my debut album titled Double Standards which was released in 2020." This album, born out of a desire to revive live music in his community, quickly became more than just a personal endeavor. "I was just trying to express myself and little did I know that it will lead us here.”
Lefa's journey was not without its hurdles. As an independent artist, financing the project was a significant challenge. "Everything came out of my pockets," he explained. Despite the financial strain, Lefa's passion and determination helped him push through. He gathered support through live shows and minimal funding from institutions, demonstrating resilience and resourcefulness.
One of the most memorable moments in Lefa's career was receiving three nominations at the Mzantsi Jazz Awards for Best Male, Best Newcomer, and Song of the Year. This recognition affirmed his talent and hard work. He credits much of his success to his mentors, "My mentor is vibraphonist Mr. Ngwako Manamela and saxophonist McCoy Mrubata."
Balancing his leadership responsibilities with personal life has been made easier through collaboration with his wife. "I work with my wife so everything is intertwined within our family and business roles." This partnership not only strengthens his project but also ensures a support system at home.
Through his work, Lefa has developed crucial skills such as conflict management and dealing with adversities. Looking ahead, he plans to build on his achievements by continuing to tour his album. "We are currently touring the album now. We are in Durban next month and Pretoria in September."
Lefa believes in leading by example to engage and motivate other young people. He actively participates in workshops and encourages others to join him. "By leading by example and showing up whenever we have workshops."
Lefa is deeply concerned about the issues facing youth today, particularly drugs, alcohol, and the lack of mentors. He uses social media to promote his cause and sponsors posts when necessary. "We sponsor posts whenever there is a need.”
Lefa measures the success of his project by the increased attendance at his music workshops. Looking to the future, he plans to undertake a recording project with talented young individuals identified through his workshops. He believes that consistent community engagement is key to supporting youth leaders. "By being consistent in reaching out to the community and the kids. That is the only way."
For other young people looking to make a difference, Lefa's advice is straightforward yet profound: "Make sure whatever you are doing you are doing for the right reasons." His journey exemplifies how passion, dedication, and a clear sense of purpose can lead to impactful and lasting change.
His work continues to inspire and uplift his community, proving that one person's passion can indeed spark a cultural renaissance.
