Stand up for Democracy: Have your say on BELA

Public participation is one of the cornerstones of the democratic system. For two and a half millennia, democracy has meant that the people, the masses, should have power. This means that the government are the representatives of the people, but also that they should listen to the voices of the people.

Summary:

Public participation is one of the cornerstones of the democratic system. For two and a half millennia, democracy has meant that the people, the masses, should have power. This means that the government are the representatives of the people, but also that they should listen to the voices of the people. DearSA saw mass public participation on the BELA Bill starting in January of 2022, with over 6700 unique participants, during which 89% of South Africans opposed this controversial piece of legislation, which essentially aims to increase the power that the National government in Pretoria has over community institutions, in this case over school governing bodies. By ignoring public sentiment, the essence of democracy is ignored. Let your voice be heard on this issue at the heart of our Rainbow nation.

Why Your Voice Matters:

In a democracy the people have the power, that means that your voice and your opinion is important. By ignoring this issue, the idea of public participation in South Africa might suffer, as government sees that ignoring the people’s voice has no real repercussions. Have your voice be heard, for democracy, and for the future of our country.
