The African Transformation Movement (ATM), along with other supporting political parties, has announced its intention to submit a formal proposal to Parliament and the Constitutional Review Committee to rename South Africa as the Republic of Azania. This proposal forms part of a broader push to revisit constitutional foundations and national identity, and will be debated publicly as part of the constitutional amendment process.
The parties argue that the current name is a colonial artifact imposed during British and Boer rule, and that a name change would reflect a more authentic African identity and heritage.
ATM and other parties believes this change is necessary to reclaim national pride and align the country’s name with its people’s history and culture. They cite examples like Namibia, formerly South West Africa, as precedents for post-colonial name changes. However, critics argue that "Azania" lacks widespread historical, cultural, or linguistic ties to the South African population, and see the proposal as unnecessary and divisive. Others point out that geographic names are common worldwide and not inherently colonial.
Critics further advise that political parties should focus their efforts on eradicating corruption and addressing the severe ever-increasing unemployment rates in South Africa. Changing the name will not change the lives of the most vulnerable.
This is your opportunity to share your view on this historic proposal. Your input is vital and legally recognized in the public participation process.
Should South Africa change its name? If not to Azania, what would you suggest?
