The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is inviting the public to weigh in on a major democratic development — the possible introduction of electronic voting (e-voting) in South Africa.
This proposed shift from paper ballots to digital systems could transform how elections are run, how accessible they are, and how quickly results are processed. But it comes with significant challenges, including security, cost, and inclusivity — especially in rural areas.
Now is the time for all South Africans — voters, civil society, political parties, and everyday citizens — to raise their voices. The IEC has released a discussion document and hosted a national conference to spark informed debate. The next step is you.
Use this platform to submit your input — every comment is legally recognised and will be included in the formal review process that informs government policy and law.
The Objective of e-voting
South Africa is exploring whether to implement electronic voting systems in future elections. The IEC wants public input on whether these systems would:
● Strengthen or weaken election integrity
● Make voting more inclusive and accessible
● Reduce or increase the cost of running elections
● Bridge or widen the digital divide
What the Policy Proposes
● A phased move toward e-voting, beginning with pilot projects
● Use of electronic machines at polling stations and potential for online voting in future
● Legislative reform to allow e-voting systems
● Public education, infrastructure development, and cybersecurity investment
What's at Stake?
● Your right to vote: Will this make voting easier or harder for you?
● Public money: Is e-voting a cost-effective investment?
● Election security: Can digital systems protect your vote?
● Access and inclusion: Will rural and disabled voters be left behind?
