One Central South African Emergency Hotline?

The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies has proposed an immense change to South Africa's emergency response system by phasing out different critical emergency numbers for different branches, such as 10111 (police), 10177 (medical emergencies), and 107 (fire, rescue, and ambulance). This proposal seeks to consolidate all emergency services under a single number—112. While intended to streamline access and modernise emergency services, this change could increase complications present in an already overburdened system.

This proposal seeks to consolidate all emergency services under a single number—112. While intended to streamline access and modernise emergency services, this change could increase complications present in an already overburdened system.
While the benefits of streamlining emergency services are obvious, data shows that SAPS call centres are severely understaffed, with an alarming percentage of emergency calls dropped or abandoned due to system failures and lack of personnel. Removing well-established emergency numbers without addressing these foundational issues risks public safety and could delay lifesaving assistance in critical situations.
Your voice matters. Participate in this campaign to urge the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies to reconsider this proposal. Let’s ensure South Africa’s emergency response remains accessible, reliable, and efficient.
