Communities in Kya Sands, Fourways, Bloubosrand, Chartwell AH, Farmall AH, and surrounding areas are being exposed to toxic smoke from the illegal burning of waste — including tyres, plastics, e-waste, chemicals, and even medical waste. These fires release hazardous fumes that poison the air, contaminate the soil, and threaten lives with asthma, respiratory illness, cancer, immune suppression, and developmental disorders.
Despite years of complaints and court action, the burning continues. Every day, residents are forced to breathe in toxic air while authorities fail to act decisively. The illegal dumping and burning operations are driven by criminal profit — at the expense of the community’s health and safety.
DearSA, in support of other local movements and affected residents, is calling on all community members to take part in a live data census to support urgent legal action and hold authorities accountable. Together, we can demand answers from the municipality and push for immediate, lasting solutions to end this environmental crisis.
Every submission will be delivered directly to council and transparently recorded, ensuring the voices and data of affected communities are heard loud and clear.
Let’s stand together — for our families, our neighbours, and our future. Add your voice today to help end the toxic burning crisis in Kya Sands and the greater Fourways region.

Understanding the process to resolve this issue at hand:
Phase 1 – Petition & Reporting:
Gather community feedback and real-time reports of burning incidents to create a verified census of affected residents and events.
Phase 2 – Formal Complaint Submission:
Submit the compiled evidence and community reports to the non-compliant authorities and entities on behalf of the community.
Phase 3 – Evidence Collection & Air Quality Monitoring:
Conduct on-site assessments and collect data to measure the extent of air pollution and its impact on public health.
Phase 4 – Legal Notice:
Issue a formal attorney’s notice to the responsible parties demanding immediate remedial action.
Phase 5 – Court Application:
If there is continued non-compliance, proceed with a High Court application to compel action and enforce accountability.
