The Department of Health has released Draft Governance Regulations for the National Health Insurance (NHI) Fund, and they're asking for your input.
These regulations will determine how the NHI Fund is run, who oversees it, and how decisions are made about the public money it manages. This is a major step in rolling out NHI — and it’s critical that governance is transparent, accountable, and inclusive.
This is your chance to help shape the leadership of a system that will directly impact healthcare access for every person in South Africa.
🕒 Deadline for comments: Friday, 6 June 2025
📝 What the Draft Governance Regulations Say (in simple terms):
These regulations aim to:
● Set up the Board and key committees that will govern the NHI Fund.
● Explain how board members will be appointed, how long they’ll serve, and what their responsibilities are.
● Outline conflict of interest rules, ethics requirements, and the removal process for members who don’t act in the public's best interest.
● Describe how decisions are made and how transparency and accountability will be ensured in the Fund’s operations.
● Introduce a Ministerial Advisory Committee to guide decisions when needed.
These rules are about who makes the big decisions on public healthcare funding — and how we can trust them to do the job right.
💬 Why Public Participation Matters:
These regulations will decide how billions in healthcare funds are managed. If we want the NHI to succeed, we need good governance. That means:
● Leaders who are competent and independent
● Clear checks and balances
● Public oversight of decisions
