During the official handover of the fire-damaged buildings to the rebuild contractor, Parliament’s secretary, Xolile George, highlighted the significance of public input in the project. The 2022 fire severely damaged key Parliament buildings, and the reconstruction, backed by over R2 billion from the National Treasury and an additional R943 million needed for ICT, aims for completion by February 2026. George emphasised that the rebuilt Parliament should reflect South Africa's democratic character, heritage, and practical needs.
