Summary:

Parliament’s reconstruction and modernisation project, set to begin later this year, now includes a dedicated website and a WhatsApp chatbot to foster public involvement. During the official handover of the fire-damaged buildings to the rebuild contractor, Parliament’s secretary, Xolile George, highlighted the significance of public input in the project. The 2022 fire severely damaged key Parliament buildings, and the reconstruction, backed by over R2 billion from the National Treasury and an additional R943 million needed for ICT, aims for completion by February 2026. The WhatsApp chatbot allows the public to rank and provide input on reconstruction principles. George emphasised that the rebuilt Parliament should reflect South Africa's democratic character, heritage, and practical needs. The public is encouraged to engage with the new architectural designs and project outlines via the website and submit their feedback. To access the chatbot, fill in the form and you will automatically be directed to the WhatsApp chatbot.
