Summary:

The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs is currently considering amendments to the donation limits and disclosure requirements under the Political Party Funding Act, 2018 (PPFA). These proposed changes come after the Western Cape High Court set an annual donation limit of R15 million per donor, and a disclosure threshold of R100,000 per financial year. According to the Act, donations exceeding this threshold must be publicly reported, promoting transparency and accountability in political financing.
This review will help determine whether these financial limits align with the democratic principles of transparency and prevent undue influence in politics. Public feedback is essential, as it will guide Parliament in setting regulations that impact both political parties and independent representatives. Your input will influence how these thresholds support fair political competition and democratic engagement in South Africa.
Money has a role to play in politics, but it can never silence your voice.

In a democracy the people have the power, that means that your voice and your opinion is important. By ignoring this issue, the idea of public participation in South Africa might suffer, as government sees that ignoring the people’s voice has no real repercussions. Have your voice be heard, for democracy, and for the future of our country.
