Have your say on the animal vaccine shortage

Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP) is a state owned entity that produces animal vaccines. Their mission states: “OBP is a customer-centric developer, manufacturer, and supplier of cost-effective quality animal health solutions, through innovation as a catalyst for food security, skills development, and economic transformation.”

Ex CEO, Dr Andile Dyasi was suspended back in 2020 and dismissed based on misconduct and poor governance of OBP. Now, in 2023, a widespread number of farmers, horse owners and livestock owners are still stranded with a shortage of supply of animal vaccines. However, the reason for the shortage is now based on Eskom’s inability to keep the lights on and therefore impacting the vaccine production at OBP.

DearSA had a look at how this vaccine shortage can affect the food chain (meat consumption and diary), the controlled spread of disease and the well being of the affected animals with alarming concern. The shortage forces owners to contravene on multiple legislative requirements without any assistance or relief programmes.

DearSA is calling on you to have your say on this important matter to prepare a proposal for urgent resolution.
